Hiking holiday in Spain
Hiking in Northern Spain
In Northern Spain, nature is beautiful and there are many opportunities for hiking. There is a lot of variety in terms of landscape and difficulty of hiking. But every hiking enthusiast can indulge himself. You will find rugged mountains in the Pyrenees, spectacular hiking spots such as the mountain Montserrat, Montseny or the Congost del Mont Rebei, but also beautiful walks along the coast, for example on the Costa Brava or the Costa Dorada. And what do you think of the cultural walks along the beautiful modernist architecture of Gaudí in Barcelona, Sitges or Reus, among others? In short, countless possibilities for a unique and unforgettable walking holiday. Trails are mostly passable and signage is excellent.
There are numerous nature parks in the Spanish Pyrenees, suitable for walks from a few hours to a few days. You can go on your own, but an organized walking tour is of course also a possibility. In every park there are guides who accompany groups of hikers and who can tell a lot about the flora and fauna. We have selected two parks that are more than worth it. The first is the Parque National d'Aigüstortes i Estany de Sant Maurici, said to be the most beautiful natural park in Spain, and the second is the National Parque Ordesa y Monte Perdido.
The Parc National d'Aigüstortes i Estany de Sant Maurici (Catalonia)
This park is the best place to visit the real high mountains in Catalonia, with breathtaking and imposing landscapes and a rich fauna and flora. The park, which lies between Pallars Sobirà and Alta Ribagorça, has an area of approximately 150 km². The main feature is water: rivers, waterfalls, ponds, glacial valleys and almost 200 mountain lakes can be found in the park. The beautiful Sant Maurici lake at the foot of the Encantats mountain is not to be missed on your hiking holiday in Northern Spain. Add to that 1,500 plant species, 150 bird species and 40 mammal species and you understand why this park is worth a walking holiday.
National Parque Ordesa y Monte Perdido (Aragon)
Have you always wanted to see the Grand Canyon? You don't have to cross the Atlantic Ocean, but plan a visit to the Ordesa National Park in your tour of Northern Spain. The steep limestone walls are spectacular and surreal to see. You can hike down in the gorge or go up with a jeep and hike on the plain and enjoy the view. The park is not accessible with your own car, but buses run all day to take you to the start of the walks and back.
Choose a central place for your walking holiday in Catalonia
Catalonia has a lot of variety in terms of natural beauty to offer, which is why it is convenient to stay in a centrally located place.
