Festa Major
What is a Festa Major?
A Festa Major (literally “big party”) is an annual event that takes place in towns and villages throughout Catalonia. Each town has its own specific dates and traditions, but the essence is the same everywhere: it is a celebration in honor of the patron saint of the local community. These events can last from a few days to a week or more, and often attract both locals and tourists.
Traditional elements of the Festa Major
The Festa Major offers a wide range of activities, here are some of the most iconic elements:
- Castellers The human towers, known as castells, are a breathtaking highlight of many Festa Major celebrations. Teams (colles) build towers of people that can reach up to ten stories high. This spectacle symbolizes cooperation and balance and is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
- Correfoc This fiery parade, literally translated as “fire walk,” sees participants dressed as devils dance under a shower of sparks. The correfoc is an explosion of energy and fire, and one of the most spectacular elements of the Festa Major.
- Gigantes y Capgrossos Giants and large, comical puppets (gigantes y capgrossos) parade through the streets, accompanied by music. These figures represent historical or mythical characters and bring a festive atmosphere to the parades.
- Sardanes This traditional Catalan dance is often performed in squares during the Festa Major. The dancers form a circle and move in harmony with the music of a cobla orchestra. The sardana is a symbol of Catalan identity and solidarity.
- Religious Processions Many Festa Major celebrations begin with a religious procession in honor of the patron saint. These events emphasize the spiritual origins of the festivities.
Modern entertainment
In addition to the traditional activities, Festa Major also includes modern events such as concerts, street theatre, food trucks and fireworks shows. This makes the festival attractive to young and old and adds a contemporary layer to the age-old traditions.
